Tallaght (Irish: Tamhlacht) is the largest town in South Dublin County. Up to the 1960s Tallaght was little more than a village in remoter County Dublin, linked to several nearby rural areas which were part of the large civil parish of the same name. Suburban development began in the 1970s and a town centre area has been developing since the late 1980s. Characterised by the same problems associated with poorly planned fringe areas of many European cities, during the 1970s and 1980s Tallaght became synonymous with suburban mismanagement. In recent years, Tallaght has developed a distinctive identity and now has a thriving local arts, cultural, sports, and economic outlook.
