I think Mike B was a little harsh on this place. For starters it's a lot less crowded and chaotic than Avoca in Kilmacanogue which in itself deserves a star. What they do in this Avoca is what it was originally all about - fresh tasty food that is better than your average cafe (but pricier too!). I recently had the fish pie which came with a selection of three salads and it was delicious, just make sure you're hungry as the portions are pretty generous. I had the soup on a different occasion and it was excellent - chunky with vegetables and really homemade tasting. They have a filter water tap at the chackout with a bucket of ice which I think is a nice touch to save you buying bottled water. Delicous looking fresh cakes and pastries too.

A beautiful store and café in a truly picturesque setting, and the ideal place to bring tourists visiting (especially during the summer months). I was up here at the weekend and the place was like a winter market, as there's great presents to be found here for girlfriends, Mums and sisters ( alphabetical order!). After a spot of shopping, we retired for lunch in the Sandwich Café (one of the two Avoca Cafés located here)... this had been the bit of the day that I was looking forward to and the reason I was so enthusiastic to go shopping in the first place. I'm a big fan of Avoca and the Fern House Café in the Kilmacanogue store, however this pales in comparison. The café is aptly named the 'Sandwich Café'... but only had one type of sandwich on offer!!! I put this down to the time of the day as we had missed the main lunch rush so perhaps there is a wider selection of sandwiches on offer earlier in the day - I hope so or they should seriously think about changing the name. I ordered the soup which was awesome but this triumph was unfortunately offset by coffee from a press the button machine... for me this place could be so much better, especially at the prices they charge - I know it can because the Fern House Café in the Avoca Store in Kilmacanogue does everything by the book!
