Doyles IS an institution!

To those who've never been, Doyles is a pub on the ground floor. A lovely typical Dublin pub, little bit grubby, big wooden bar and booths all around the place (and a lovely snug tucked away in the corner). Lovely for a quiet drink in the evening during the week. There's another area downstairs, but upstairs in the "lounge" is where the fun really starts and where things get a lot more lively. There's another smaller bar, but more importantly there's the dancefloor. The difference between Doyles and most other typical late night pubs with dancefloors, is the music. Doyles is a grungier kind of place and the music is Indie, Electro, Pop, Dance kind of stuff with a load of remixes and old alternative/80s/90s classics thrown in. The DJ is a gem. He always has the latest tunes or brilliant remixes and his mixing is perfect.

The crowd is also generally more rowdy and are there to dance their hearts out to some Smiths, New Order, Foals, Phoenix. I've never seen any trouble in the place, everyone is always incredibly friendly. You can turn up wearing whatever you want. You won't be out of place if you bail into the pub in your jeans and t-shirt after a gig, and the same if you turn up in your frock and heels on a night out. In other words no one cares what your wearing here. More often than not the place is packed (especially during college terms) and it turns into a bit of a sweatbox. But they throw open all the sash windows and the wind will keep you cool! For some reason no matter how packed it is, you're never waiting more than 5 minutes for a drink. They do good deals and the staff are all lovely. They're usually dancing along behind the bar aswell.

The greatest thing about this place is that you're left to your own devices. There's bouncers on the door but thats it. Thats not to say that it gets rough or that you can get away with wrecking the place. What it does mean is that you can get away with finding a cardboard box, putting it on and dancing like a robot for the night. Or robbing left over birthday cake and bringing it around the dancefloor to share with everyone. Or having everyone in the place go mental on the dancefloor for Killing In The Name Of/Smack My Bitch Up complete with crowd surfing. You can make your own fun in here.

There's many other great indie spots around Dublin at the moment (Andrews Lane, Workmans Club, the Academy to name a few) and they're all fantastic and well worth a night out. But for some reason I regularly find myself back in Doyles on nights in town. Don't know what it is about the place but I love it and it's always given me fantastic nights out and some brilliant memories.

Simple as.

Doyles has become quite the institution amongst myself and my friends, and appears to be a favourite among many (from the size of the crowd it attracts!). We have even coined the phrase "a Doyles night"! "A Doyles night" occurs on Friday nights when the resident Doyles' DJ ensures everyone is dancing into the early hours of Saturday morning. It is also a good place for a quiet drink mid-week!
