Dublin Zoo was opened in 1831 by the then Royal Zoological Society of Ireland. The zoo houses many wild and endangered animals - there are tigers, hippos, bats, lions, rare monkeys, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and red pandas to name but a few of the amazing animals you'll find waiting for you at Dublin Zoo!

Dublin Zoo... it does exactly what it says on the tin!
Like many others I returned after what is at least a ten year gap since my last visit, and yep, its still as much fun and excitement as when I was a wee bit younger. The place is twice as big now and most of the areas have been revamped (though the seals and penguin area might need a paint job)
The key to a good day out is go early to avoid the pack (no puns intended).
Pros: Animals, animals and animals! Big open space and plenty of walking. Meercats in a restaurant (now why didn't I think of that!)
Cons: still a bit sad to see animals in captivity but has to be done as their habitats disappear.

Love the Zoo!! Its handy to get to and is a great way to pass 5 or 6 hours!! I go to the zoo quite a lot throughout the year from January to December , its an all year round activity!! (so long as the rain stays away)
I think the only thing that might put people off going would be the price. but I find the yearly memberships great value esp if you go more then 2 or 3 times a year! And if you think of it the price your paying is to keep all the amazing animals they keep!!
I can't fault it at all!! Love it!!

I think every single Irish person that's been alive in the past 100 years has probably been to Dublin Zoo, so I wasn't madly enthusiastic about it when I went back recently with a friend, but actually I had a blast!

They seem to update the enclosures quite regularly, so there's nearly always something new to see! When I was there they were just opening or renovating a new African plains enclosure, which looks like it's going to be really great, with big overhanging walkways so you can safely get nice and close to the animals without having to press your face up against the glass. The ticket price isn't cheap, but it's a really, really great day out (especially if you get some good weather).
