I was recently kicked out of my office for a couple of hours while it was cleaned or some such thing (something about an alligator in the bathroom? I wasn't really paying attention) and I wandered into the Museum. For free. I know , I know, it's always been free, so's the National Art Gallery around the corner, but I always forget that I can just wander in and see the most important treasures in our history whenever the hell I want. For free. I just can't help shake the feeling that this might be the most under-appreciated building in the whole city. The first thing you see when you wander in is a room full of GOLD, for God's sake! (Well, second, the first thing you see if the gift shop. Which is like gold for the modern world, really).

The museum itself is located in a beautifully maintained building and honestly it's worth going in just to admire the mosaic floors, never mind all the beautiful monastic texts, viking grave goods, sacrificed bodies pulled out of bogs and- did I mention the room of gold? There tends to be a visiting exhibition of some sort or another, and if Irish history isn't your thing there are some really nice sections with Greek, Roman and Egyptian artifacts, not to mention an extensive section on the Vikings. There's also a section on Sacrifice and Kingship which has some really incredibly preserved bodies, but it might not be an exhibit for everyone. The Cafe is also very nice and the gift shop has some really fantastic stuff too.

If you ever find yourself at a loose end in Dublin, I really can't recommend it enough. You were probably dragged there on a school trip at some stage, but it's so much nicer to go back on a quiet afternoon and just wander around at your own pace. And if you don't like it, just leave! After all, it is free.

This is a good place to go if you have a free afternoon or morning. There is lots to see in this busy but peaceful spot. It has changed its exhibits around and some nice "new" pieces have been brought out on display. I come here every once in a while to relax. I was really impressed with the collection of new item now out on display.
If you are into early Irish history, culture, art or design it is well worth the visit and you will leave feeling satisfied.
The museum is very central and just around the corner from the other national museums.
The museum has a cozy little coffee shop and a nice gift shop.
If you are doing projects for history or art classes, there is wonderful selection of postcards to choose from.

Keywords: cozy, educational, wonderful
