The Stags Head Pub began its life as one of the city's favourite watering holes in the 1870s. It was the first pub to have electricity in the city, and was a regular haunt of James Joyce. The bar is a real tribute to the tradition of the Dublin bar with its leather chairs, stained glass windows, big mahogany bar with red Connemara marble top, and cosy snug.

I agree with everything Mike says, great pub. A big group of us were there last Friday night for my birthday celebrations and we ended up taking over most of the basement where a brilliant trad band were playing all night. There's a really good atmosphere and, like Mike said, it has resisted the general move towards bland yuppiness which has happened in so many other Dublin pubs. The basement murals are terrible and it smells strange too, but this place is definitely worth five stars.

The Stags Head is one of the oldest pubs in Dublin and is one my old favourites too. Sure it might be a bit of a tourist trap but it's one I like to fall into whenever I'm in the area (and low and behold it happened again just last week!). I came across this place when I was in college as they used to sponsor one of the societies I was a member of. I can still recall the slogan they used on their advert in the society magazine: "Best sausage & chips in town!". Now, if you know a student who could resist such advertising lure... I'd like to meet them! The Guinness is consistently good here and they have official Guinness certificates on the wall as testament to this fact. I was only going to award this place four stars but I feel it deserves five; purely because they have resisted the temptation to smother the walls in the colour 'taupe', hang large beige lampshades over the bar and line every interior wall with brown leather couches - a rare thing for a pub in Dublin these days - RESPECT!
